AbstractTerrestrialecosystemsinChinareceivetheworld’slargestamountofreactivenitrogen(N)deposition.Recentcontrolsonnitrogenoxides(NOx?=?NO?+?NO2)emissionsinChinatotackleairpollutionareexpectedtodecreaseNdeposition,yettheobservedNdepositionfluxesremainalmoststagnant.HereweshowthattheeffectivenessofNOxemissioncontrolsforreducingoxidizedN(NOy?=?NOx?+?itsoxidationproducts)depositionisunforeseeninEasternChina,withone-unitreductioninNOxemissionleadingtoonly55?76%reductionsinNOy-Ndeposition,asopposedtothehigheffectiveness(around%)inbothSouthernChinaandtheUnitedStates.Usinganatmosphericchemicaltransportmodel,wedemonstratethatthisunexpectedweakenedresponseofNdepositionisattributabletotheenhancedatmosphericoxidizingcapacitybyNOxemissionsreductions.ThedeclineinNdepositioncouldbearapenaltyonterrestrialcarbonsinksandshouldbetakenintoaccountwhendevelopingpathwaysforChina’scarbonneutrality.
